What Sam Larner, fisherman and folk singer

The SamFest 2015 festival in a nutshell

The SamFest 2015 festival is a four-day celebration of the life and songs of Sam Larner of Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk.

Herring fisherman Sam Larner was one of the most important and influential English traditional folk singers. He was born in 1878, and SamFest is being held on the 50th anniversary of his death in September 1965.

First 'discovered' by a BBC producer in 1956, and subsequently championed by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, Sam Larner was an inspirational singer and performer. His songs have subsequently been spread all over the world by hundreds of his folk singing fans.

SamFest 2015, taking place 17 - 20 September, will celebrate Sam Larner with concerts, sing-arounds, showcase performances, talks and film shows. Festival events will take place in Sam Larner's native Winterton-on-Sea, and in North Walsham.

And there will be herrings too!
